Lark

Did Levi Banks almost kiss me? There must be something in this wine or I’m hallucinating. Maybe I’m high from the peppermint oil back at the spa.

But no. I think he actually almost made a move.

Huh.

Even more strange—I’m not mad about it.

My mom drops off the strawberries and I shoot her a pointed glare, clearly conveying Get lost. She takes the hint, leaving as quickly as she came, but now Levi and I are back to the same awkwardness. He jumps up, grabbing for the next bottle of wine.

“Ready for the white?” He starts pouring, not waiting for an answer, while I munch on a piece of cheese, lactose be damned.

Maybe this is all part of his plan—knock me off my game so I forget about the land.

Levi sits back down next to me, resting his chin on his hand. I notice the slight shadow of stubble covering his jaw and wonder how that slight scruff would feel against my skin.

“What about you, Lark? What do you want? Besides my land, I mean.” The low rumble of his voice knocks me out of my daydream. “You want to stay on Candy Cane Key? Or do you have bigger adventures in mind?” He locks his crystal blue eyes on me, and warmth unfurls low in my belly.

Probably from the cheese.

“I’m staying here, for now. Helping my parents with the inn. They’re planning on retiring soon and I’ll take over. If we still have it…” My voice trails off as I catch my mistake, but Levi’s too sharp, too observant.

“What do you mean? The Sugar Plum’s been here forever. It’s a staple in Candy Cane Key.” He stares at me, waiting for an answer.

I shrug. “Times have changed. People are booking more private houses online. They want amenities—pools, the beach—that we don’t have. We can’t compete. That’s why I’m interested in your land. For the beach access.”

“Oh.” Levi scrubs a hand over the back of his neck and I run my finger around the cool rim of the wine glass, avoiding his steady gaze.

“Isn’t there land anywhere else you can buy?” he finally asks.

“Yeah. Wisconsin,” I answer wryly.

He scrunches up his nose. “Huh?”

“Never mind, long story. So there you have my sad tale of the Sugar Plum Inn. All I want is a happy ending for my parents. But I understand why you can’t make it happen.”

My voice quivers and a lone hot tear falls from my eye.

Damn it. Crying on Levi definitely isn’t part of the plan; things aren’t supposed to go this way.

“Lark—” Levi lifts his thumb, gently wiping the tear away. “Don’t cry.”

Conflicting emotions swirl through me and now I’m even more torn. I close my eyes and rest my face in his rough palm.

Eden had been right—I wish I never came up with this stupid plan in the first place.

And then I feel his warm lips pressing lightly against mine, and something swells in my chest.

Now I’m kissing him back—Levi freaking Banks—and damn, this man is a good kisser.
